A great source for inspiration in animation and illustration: Les Triplettes de Belleville

The Triplets of Belleville French animated comedy film by Sylvain Chomet. Read more on wiki.

I am very very inspired by this work of art for many reasons. It's a great story, illustrated with an exaggerated style that contributes a lot to the storytelling but also creates a lot of comedy.

There is an almost total absence of dialog. So the story emerges from the beautiful images, the soundtrack and the animation of each character. Definitely a movie to see.

This scene is one of my favorites. After you have seen it think how much story was told and in what way, without them actually saying anything. I love that waiter and the squarish Goons!

Sylvain Chomet has also directed a movie called the illusionist which is told in the same way.
